LANDER, Wyo. – It was the biggest event of the year, some said. They were talking about Tuesday’s opening of the new Lifestyle Safeway Store in Lander. The place was packed by mid afternoon as people from across the county stopped in to check it out, before its grand-opening today.

Along with being bigger, brighter and newer than the old store, they found that the new Safeway on Lander’s Main Street features a variety of new items — like an olive bar, flower kiosk and sea food station. And the produce department where Ron Holst mans the “Taste of Safeway” tasting stations is a blast to the senses — in a good way — with its bright, cheery and colorful displays. He’s just one of the 100 people who works at the store.

I talked with him about the new store and his job there during the media tour. Here’s a little bit of that conversation. — GO TO THE AUDIO CLIP

The tour guide for the store’s opening day festivities was actually Todd Broderick of the Safeway regional office in Denver who talked about some of the specific new features, like the Rancher’s Reserve Beef while one of his meat cutters showed how it was done. – AUDIO CLIP

Another feature of the new store which covers 44,000 square feet of ground is the state of the art pharmacy located along the back wall. It looks almost like a doctor’s office was plopped right in the middle of the grocery store with its dark-colored wood facing and cubicles that allow for privacy. During the tour, Brian Pauver described how that’s all going to work. – AUDIO CLIP

Everyone on the grand-opening tour learned that the concept of Safeway’s new Lifestyle store is to give shoppers the complete grocery shopping experience. That means — along with traditional grocery items — the store offers a full line of organic products, a gourmet cheese center, liquor store, and a full service bakery and deli. And don’t forget, they said you can also pick up Seattle’s Best Coffee and a fill up your car with gas at Safeway’s outside fuel stop before you leave.
