LYSITE, Wyo. – Authorities still do not know what caused Tuesday morning’s fire at the ConocoPhillips Lost Cabin gas plant near Lysite in Fremont County. Company spokesperson Jim Lowry believes it was the gas that caught fire when it was released into a confined space. But  Fire Chief Craig Haslam says his team is still investigating. He’s with the Fremont County Fire Protection District.

No one was hurt in the fire, but it did cause major damage and inconvenience for both workers and townspeople. The roof of the building burned out when the plant went into automatic shut-down mode. And the residents of Lysite were forced to leave town, for about five hours that morning, from 5:30 to 10:30, because company officials were concerned about the quality of the air.

Haslam, however, says that no-one was ever in any danger of breathing hazardous gases because his team was monitoring levels throughout the morning. As for the evacuation, well, both company officials and emergency personnel say that was just a precaution.
