CHEYENNE, Wyo. (AP) – September is Prostate Cancer Awareness
Month in Wyoming and the state health department is encouraging men
to speak with their doctors about risks and screening options.
The health department says the odds of surviving prostate cancer
may be higher with early detection.
Jessica Perez is outreach coordinator for the Wyoming
Comprehensive Cancer Control Program at the health department.
Perez says all men can develop prostate cancer, but that studies
have shown the risk of getting it increases with age. Factors that
may affect the likelihood of getting the disease include race,
diet, general health and family history.
There were 460 new cases of prostate cancer diagnosed in Wyoming
in 2007 and 44 men died of the disease.
