Rockies unable to overcome Ubaldo’s off night

PHOENIX — The Rockies expected ace pitcher Ubaldo Jimenez to lead them Wednesday night, but he was lost.

Consecutive home runs in the top of the first by Melvin Mora and Todd Helton gave the Rockies a four-run lead, but Jimenez coughed it up. After that, his stunned teammates lost all their momentum, and the Rockies absorbed a damaging 8-4 loss to the D-backs at Chase Field.

The loss was the Rockies’ third straight and it left them three games behind the Padres, who leapfrogged the Giants atop the National League West. The Rockies also trail the Braves by three games in the NL Wild Card race.

That doesn’t necessarily excuse the Rockies’ nine strikeouts, many of them looking. Carlos Gonzlaez, the NL batting leader at .341, doubled, singled and walked, but the Rockies went 1-for-6 with runners in scoring position and have scored in just two of the last 27 innings, five runs total.
