Man found dead in county jail

LANDER, Wyo. - Local authorities are investigating the death of a male inmate found yesterday morning in the Fremont County jail in Lander.

County Coroner Ed McAuslan said 39-year-old Kenneth Sungoesslow of Fort Washakie was found dead in a cell. The coroner did not elaborate on how the man died, saying he expects to have more information later today after he sees the preliminary autopsy results.

Det. Sgt. Ryan Lee of the Sheriff’s Office said his department is still investigating the incident, so will not be giving out any details just yet.

The sheriff’s deputy did say the inmate had been in the county jail since last Friday. He was brought in by federal agents and is being held on federal charges.

Sheriff’s report logs possible stabbing/shooting

RIVERTON, Wyo. – The Fremont County Sheriff’s Log reports that a man was possibly shot or stabbed in his side over the weekend. According to the report, the wounded man showed up at a Riverton residence on Major Avenue about 5:20 Saturday morning asking for an ambulance. That’s where the details of the alleged incident end. The investigation was turned over to the Wind River Police Department, and that agency does not discuss incidents that are under investigation.

Gun slinger faces 25 years

RIVERTON, Wyo. – A 21-year-old man could get 25 years in prison for pulling a gun out of his vehicle and pointing it at two men in the Smith’s parking lot in Riverton. According to an affidavit filed in Riverton’s Circuit Court, Vincent Gregory Burnett threatened the men with a double-barreled 12-gauge shot gun on Sept. 3.

Burnett has been charged on two counts of aggravated assault and battery and possession of a weapon with unlawful intent. He’s being held on a $50,000 bond, and has waived a preliminary hearing. Each aggravated assault and battery charge carries a maximum sentence of 10 years, and the weapon possession charge, 5 years. Fines could total more than $20,000.
