Game official talks about rules, education courses, sick sheep herd

Guest Lucy Wold of the Wyoming Game and Fish Department said some hunters just aren’t following the rules. She talked with Host Leslie Stratmoen about the problem on today’s Chit Chat show. She took the opportunity to remind hunters of a new rule about how many feet hunters need to be from a public road before taking a shot. What used to be over the ditch and past the road fencing is now 30 feet.

She also said the Lander and Riverton regions are in need of hunter education instructors and the department’s still concerned about the bighorn sheep herd on Whiskey Mountain near Dubois. They’re suffering from pneumonia and the department has not been able to figure out why.

Because of this concern, game officials are asking hunters and hikers to report any sheep that look sickly. She said you’ll be able to tell because they’re coughing and are all stuffed up.

Other topics discussed included: elk season, which opens Friday; the bear hunters’ mortality hotline; and the Canyon Ranch’s designation as land owner of the year for the Lander region.
