Sub named for Equality State gets women on crew

CHEYENNE, Wyo. (AP) – A submarine named for the Equality State will be among the first to have women in the crew. It’s about time, some might say, since historians believe Wyoming to be the first government in the world to grant women the right to vote. That was in 1869.

Navy officials say the USS Wyoming will get six female officers by the end of next year after they complete training. The announcement was made yesterday. The ship carries ballistic missiles and is based in Kings Bay, Ga.

Women had been banned from serving aboard submarines until just his spring. Other subs welcoming six women aboard at about the same time as the USS Wyoming will be the USS Georgia, USS Maine and USS Ohio. Names of the women have not been released.
