The Wyoming Cowgirl basketball team (18-5 overall, 8-2 MWC) won their second straight game with a 78-65 victory over the New Mexico Lobos (8-13 overall, 2-7 MWC) on Tuesday night in Laramie.

Three Cowgirls finished the night in double-figures including senior Aubrey Vandiver. She recorded her ninth double-double of the season with 28 points and ten rebounds, while shooting 9-16 from the field and 6-9 from beyond the arc. Jade Kennedy recorded a career high 23 points while shooting 8-13 from the field and 7-11 from the three-point line. Hillary Carlson added 15 points, six boards and three blocked shots. Wyoming was 27-51 (.529) from the field and 13-27 (.481) from beyond the arc. The 13 three-point field goals made was a season high.

The Lobos were led by Jasmine Patterson who finished with a team high 17 points in her 26 minutes of play. She was followed by Amanda Best with 14 points and Caroline Durbin with ten. Porche Torrance recorded a team high eight rebounds. New Mexico was 26-63 (.413) from the field and 10-23 (.435) from beyond the arc.

“On Monday at our press conference we talked about how New Mexico has been playing very well and I thought tonight was two teams that just found a way to keep fighting,” said head coach Joe Legerski. “The number of lead changes shows that each team was out trying to gain an inch tonight, which was very difficult. For us having Hillary on the bench for 16 minutes of the first half in foul trouble, it really limits our ways to attack the basket. You could see Jade Kennedy knew that somebody needed to step up and I thought she did that. She played very well in the first half and continued that in the second half and made some big threes down the stretch. Aubrey is Aubrey, 28 points, 10 rebounds, playing 40 minutes, asking her to defend at a high level. Just kept us going because both Aubrey and Jade knew without Hillary we needed to find points. To be able to go into halftime with the lead is just a truly remarkable effort by this group and those two players in particular.”

The Cowgirls scored the first five points to take an early 5-0 lead. UNM got on the board with an Amanda Best jumper at 17:51. Wyoming would extend the lead to seven, 9-2, but two baskets by the Lobos pulled them to within three, 9-6, through the first media timeout. An Aubrey Vandiver field goal would end a two minute drought for the Cowgirls and start a 5-0 run to put them back up 14-6. New Mexico responded with seven of the next ten to make it a four point game, 17-13. Over the next stretch, the two teams combined for just two baskets. The Lobos would narrow the margin to one, 21-20, and scored the next six straight to take a three-point lead with four minutes left in the half. Aubrey Vandiver would hit two free throws to end a five minute drought for Wyoming. With time winding down in the half, a Jade Kennedy three point field goal put the Cowgirls up 28-26 at the half.

After a three-point basket by the Lobos put them up one, 29-28, Wyoming answered with an 8-0 run to regain a 36-29 advantage. New Mexico scored the next seven to pull even with 15 minutes to go in the game. Over the next stretch of play the two teams traded baskets with neither team gaining a significant lead. Down 44-43, Wyoming scored five straight to make it 48-44. After a couple of free throws by Lauren Taylor, the Cowgirls went on a 15-3 run to help them take a 12-point lead, 61-49. Caroline Durbin would end a three minute scoring drought for the Lobos, but UW continued to be solid and increased the lead back to 16, 71-55. Despite being out scored down the final few minutes, the Cowgirls held onto the 78-65 victory.

The Cowgirls close out the week on the road as they travel to Fort Worth to face the TCU Frogs. The game is set for 11:00 a.m.
