BILLINGS, Mont. – State, federal and tribal officials say they expect to finalize within days a proposal to let Yellowstone bison roam more freely in parts of Montana.

The proposal would allow migrating bison onto tens of thousands of acres in the Gardiner Basin. In the past, bison entering that area were routinely hazed back into the park or captured and slaughtered.

Mel Frost is with the Montana Fish, Wildlife and Parks. He said Monday that the public will have a chance to weigh in on the proposal during a public meeting. That’s scheduled for April 14 in Gardiner.

More than 600 bison have been captured leaving the park this winter to prevent the spread of the disease brucellosis. Plans to ship many of those animals to slaughter were blocked by Montana’s Gov. Brian Schweitzer.
