Snowmobile plan coming soon

CHEYENNE, Wyo. – The National Park Service is releasing its recommendation for how many snowmobiles should be allowed in Yellowstone National Park during the winter.

The agency has been studying a range of options for future snowmobile use in the park, ranging from allowing 720 machines a day to an outright ban. Its recommendation is scheduled to be released today and will be followed by more study and public comment.

The dispute over snowmobiles in the nation’s first national park has been ongoing for years. Environmentalists want the machines banned from the park, while snowmobile users and manufacturers want to see their use continued.

If a new rule for snowmobiles is not adopted by next winter, the machines will be barred from the park until a different rule is adopted.
