DUBOIS, Wyo. (AP) – Near Dubois, wildlife officials there are opening two wildlife management areas to public access after keeping them closed longer than normal because of deep snow.

The state Game and Fish Department says it will open the Inberg-Roy and Spence-Moriarty wildlife management areas in western Wyoming Friday. The department had extended the closure to prevent people from disturbing the elk. Wyoming’s deep snowpack has made it tough for wildlife to find food at higher elevations.

But wildlife officials say the snow is melting at the mid-level elevations, allowing the elk to move into the forest. They’re encouraging people to give any elk they see plenty of space. About 4,000 elk winter in the area.
