RIVERTON, Wyo. – Local authorities are investigating a fire that caused heavy smoke and heat damage to the contents of the Arapaho Baptist Church on the Wind River Indian Reservation in Fremont County.

Riverton Fire Chief Matt Lee said the Alcohol, Tobacco and Firearms division has been brought in to investigate, along with the FBI, Bureau of Indian Affairs and reservation police force.

He said the church on C’Hair Lane is privately owned and falls under federal jurisdiction because it’s on the reservation.

The fire chief said there was heavy smoke and fire showing when they arrived, but the fire was knocked down within about 45 minutes, which saved the structure.

He said fire fighters remained on scene for another 2-3 hours, then stayed throughout most of the day watching for flare ups.

No one was injured in the blaze.
