RIVERTON, Wyo. — The Fremont County Sheriff’s office reports today that a man from Georgia died last night during a high-mountain hike in the Wind River Range above Dubois. Rescuers tried to get to the 65-year-old after receiving a call from his hiking party, but they were too late. When they arrived at 7, two hours after the call, the man was dead.

Sheriff’s Capt. Ryan Lee said his department initiated both a ground and air rescue in an effort to reach the man as quickly as possible. The effort took so long because he was in the Lake Louise area, which is a six-mile hike and 1600 feet in elevation gain from the nearest trailhead.

His body was brought out to the trailhead by Search and Rescue. Fremont County Coroner Ed McAuslan did not release the man’s name, pending notification of relatives. And he said he’s waiting to see the man’s medical records before determining the cause of death. The man’s hiking partners reported symptoms similar to that of a heart attack.
