Haldis I. Shelton of Riverton

Haldis I. Shelton 92 of Riverton, died on Saturday, January 11, 2014 at Westward Heights in Lander. Funeral services will be held on Friday, January 17, 2014 at the United Methodist Church in Riverton at 2:00 pm. Pastor Don Schlichting will officiate. Burial will follow at Mountain View Cemetery.

Haldis Irene Heggum was born on February 2, 1921 in Seattle, WA to Issaac and Bessie Heggum. She grew up in Utah, Idaho, and Montana. She graduated high school in Ogden, UT with the class of 1940.

On June 17, 1940, she married Glenn H. Shelton at the Untied Methodist Church in Ogden, UT.

She was a “Rosie Riveter” during WWII at Mare Island Naval Station near Vallejo, CA.

After the war she and her husband settled in Napa, CA. She started one of the first care homes in Napa and received honorable recognition for 50+ years of service. She helped with mentally disabled Sunday school classes at the First Presbyterian Church in Napa. She also started a bowling program for handicap individuals in Napa.

Her family said she enjoyed gardening of all kinds, bowling, traveling, taking cruises with the “Shelton Girls” which consisted of 6 particular girls she had in her life for 50+ years, and having pool parties in Napa for the Holidays. She was always happy when the family would camp at Hat Creek every summer for 40+ years. She was devoted to her family and friends.

After her husband passed in 2001, she moved to Riverton in 2002 to be close to her son and his family.

She is survived by her daughter-in-law, Milli Shelton of Riverton; her grandson, Steven (Leslie) Shelton of Cheyenne, Todd (Kelly) Shelton of Yreka, CA, and Tim Shelton of Gillette; her great grandchildren, Kendrick, Kaytlynn , Max, Kyler , Alyssa, and Benjamin; her adopted daughter, Betty Wood, and her good friend, Amelia Stream.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Issaac and Bessie Heggum; her husband, Glenn Shelton; her son, Richard Shelton; her brother, Holland Heggum; and great great baby Parker.

Memorials may be made to Special Olympics of Napa Valley in care of Davis Funeral Home, 2203 West Main Street, Riverton, WY 82501.
