(Riverton) – A fire in a floor furnace apparently caused the destruction of the former First Baptist Church in Riverton last week.

Firemen were called to the church around 4:30 in the morning last Wednesday and put out a fire associated with the furnace but the unit caught fire again a few hours later.

The Wyoming State Fire Marshall’s office has conducted a preliminary investigation and will issue a final report in a few days.

The building has been condemned as authorities say the walls are unstable.
