(Riverton) – The Weather Channel says nature dished out an out-of-season surprise Tuesday as a tornado formed north of Riverton and west of Shoshoni around 2 p.m.

Kelly Allen, the fire weather program manager at the National Weather Service in Riverton says the tornado lasted only about 2 minutes and hit in an undeveloped area.

Fremont County has only recorded six previous tornadoes since 1996.

Five of the six caused no damage at all, and the other caused $10,000 in damage and one minor injury in Dubois in 2008.

Yesterday’s tornado was unusually early for Wyoming, where the peak tornado months are typically June and July
