(Cheyenne) – As the weather warms up, the Wyoming Department of Health is cautioning the state’s residents and tourists to avoid mosquitoes and ticks because they can spread potentially serious diseases.

Mosquitoes spread West Nile Virus while ticks can pass on Rocky Mountain spotted fever, Colorado tick fever and other infections.

State epidemiologist Emily Thorp says the diseases can be quite serious and have sometimes been deadly.

Fremont County has been an active area for West Nile Virus infections since it first appeared in Wyoming in 2002.
